How to work two full-time jobs.

April 26, 2012 by Rika

Well, the jury is in and apparently it's not easy working two full-time jobs (weird, right?)I work a 40 hour week Monday to Friday during the day at my office job, and then at the gelateria Wednesday/ Thursday/ Friday nights (right after the office job - luckily for me they are only a few blocks from each other) and Saturday & Sundays from late afternoon to around 11pm. So my free time now consists of Mondays and Tuesdays from 5pm till I go to bed, and Saturdays & Sundays from when I ...

18 hour days.

April 25, 2012 by Rika

Yeah, so these 18 hour days are a little hard. This video of diving in Roatan is helping me get through one today. 24 more days until there is Bay Island Creole in my ear, rum punch in my hand, baleadas in my belly and a smile on my face.underwater canon rebel t2i Roatan scuba video from Ryan Ware on Vimeo. ...

Why are you leaving?

April 24, 2012 by Rika

"Why are you leaving?"I get asked this all the time."Why would you even want to move to a foreign country, especially one that doesn't have Canada's glorious standard of living, to a town of 300 people that doesn't even have a paved road, streetlights, grocery store or potable water, and take an 80% pay cut (if you even find work at all)?"I guess that's a fair question....The answer is long, and complicated. Or is it? Maybe it's just to experience something different for a while. ...

Up and down.

April 23, 2012 by Rika

Sometimes I think this blog reads like a roller coaster - up ("going to Roatan wooooooooooo") and down ("forgot about a billion things I have to pay for boooooooooo") over and over again. Although, when I stop to think about it, it's really what life has been like lately so I guess at least it's accurate...?We are back on an UP after my lame downer about my tax miscalculations with having two jobs this year. I hadn't taken into consideration that I wasn't getting enough income ...

Over and over again.

April 20, 2012 by Rika

Once again I have managed to overlook an important detail - I hope when people read this blog they can avoid some of the mistakes I am making! Oh well, all in the name of knowledge, right? In my post a couple days ago, I talked about how I'm going to be rolling in cash by the time I leave on my cubicle throwdown thanks to working what basically amounts to two full-time jobs. I completely forgot that with all this money comes a new tax rate since my jobs are not taking into ...

If you just impulsively bought a plane ticket, read this.

April 18, 2012 by Rika

When I found out I was going to have to stay in Vancouver an extra 6-8 weeks longer than I thought, I somewhat impulsively bought a plane ticket to Roatan for next month to go for a quick 8-day trip to tide me over until I can get there long-term at the end of September. I also want to go again before quitting my jobs, leaving my apartment, selling everything I own and traipsing to Central America with a dream fuelled by a 3 week holiday that has a lot of hazy memories due to extreme ...

Be careful what you wish for.

April 17, 2012 by Rika

I should know better by now. I should know that when I ask, the universe delivers. I asked for money, and oh boy, am I getting it, but this is not what I had in mind!!The gelato shop owner loves me. Thinks I am a stellar employee, a great team member, all that. (May or may not have something to do with all the other staff not being old enough to drink.) After 4 shifts he gave me a raise to $15/hr and scheduled me for 9 days in a row - every single day right after my office job until ...

No time.

April 13, 2012 by Rika

I'm working 8 hours at the office today then going straight to another 7 hours at the gelateria tonight, so I have no time for a post. But this video made my heart happy, so take a look at this instead of reading my ramblings for the day. I think it is rather relevant given my awesome news yesterday.MAKE IT COUNT.Side note: I watched this video the day this guy posted it (April 9) and it had about 5,000 views when I watched it. It's since gone viral and when I posted it here on ...

Oh, what a beautiful day.

April 12, 2012 by Rika

I was having a tough weekend last weekend.I decided I better stick the part-time job out to September 15 (why?) so that pushed my trip date back by almost two months, and I was upset about that. Then, in the wonderful way the universe works, I received a "flight alert" email just ten minutes later from Expedia letting me know that in May the price of flights from Vancouver to Roatan were back down to around $700 return (about the cheapest they ever get, and the same price as I paid when I ...
