Roatan Month 17 Roundup

January 15, 2014 by Rika

Seventeen months! Did you know that’s how long killer whales gestate for?

Me neither. But I googled “seventeen months” and that’s what the internet says. The more you know…

Speaking of killer whales, holy Blackfish. This is some seriously sad business. If you like to visit aquariums, you should watch that movie. Also, someone sent me this video of Kuroshiro Sea tank with good intentions, but literally the first three seconds had me in tears. If you watch this and you think, “wow, what beautiful majestic sea creatures”, please watch Blackfish at the link above. When I watch the Kuroshiro video, I see sea creatures swimming aimless circles in a bathtub. They do not belong in captivity. This is how sea creatures are meant to be viewed. You go to them. They do not come to you and live out their days in a shitty tank for your convenience.

/end rant.

You can always see all my monthly roundups by clicking on the ’roundup’ tag below… but here they all are in order: Month 16, Month 15, Month 14, Month 13, Month 12, Month 11, Month 10, Month 9, Month 8, Month 7, Month 6, Month 5, Month 4, Month 3, Month 2 and finally little old Month 1. Sometimes when you type ‘month’ that many times it looks really weird.

In case you haven’t noticed, I haven’t been around here much lately. I could tell you why, but the charming Alex from Alex in Wanderland has already gone inside my head and written a beautiful and honest post about it so just read hers instead for now. I’ll be back soon.

Roundup time!

1. Gratuitous diving photo:

Part of some big changes at work lately have left me out of the water. I’m digging deep for some diving photos I haven’t shared yet… either this section of the roundup is going to change, or I’m going to have to figure out a way to go diving more often!

i’m in the front… thanks capt. veroba for the great shot.

2. Posts from the last month:

I’ve failed miserably on my ‘be a more active blogger’ resolution. Dang.

  • I entered the 2013 Expat Blog Awards and won silver for Honduras. Which was actually last since there was only two of us who entered 🙂
  • I shared my experience of my first real expat Christmas.
  • I took a little break from blogging and came back to tell my readers, no, I didn’t leave on a megayacht again, I am still here – and shared some new diving videos that I made.

3. The coolest thing I found on the internet this month:

This kid who is seriously just so rad for not only being such a competent and calm diver at age 13, but also has the skills and fearless attitude to let cleaner shrimp into his mouth on a dive!! I let them give me manicures sometimes, but I’ve never let them in my mouth. This wins for hilariousness and awesomeness and I’m giving that little dude an internet high five.

Adios, month seventeen.

Guys, make sure to follow me on Facebook and Twitter … there’s lots of extras posted there that don’t make it onto the blog. (I also have Google+ if anyone even uses that?) Plus it makes me brave enough to let cleaner shrimp clean my teeth. So there’s that.

Totally true, girl. I've fallen off the wagon big time and haven't written in nearly a month, but I got so caught up with moving and stuff. At least I'll have a good post coming up next – new house!

Not too sure what my plan is, right now I have no plan 🙂

The way you all talk about it, I don't know if I can watch it. As I get older I can hardly watch someone blow their nose without tearing up (exaggeration of course but you get the point).

I think it just becomes harder to write as time goes on. The newness of being an expat is gone a bit. But as long as things come up, you write when you're ready to. We'll be here. 🙂 As always, I'm so proud of you and your 17 months (I was about to write years). Speaking of….you think Roatan will be a permanent move? I guess I speak a little bit from my own thoughts. I don't know where I'm going from Cabo. I have 5 months to think about it. Yikes!

Hehe – I always let them give me manicures, but a teeth cleaning…not sure sure about 🙂

That last photo! OMG. Not sure I'd have the nerve =)

I totally agree. So sad! There's a resort here with captive dolphins for shows and swimming with them, and people always ask me if they should go…I say NO!

Sorry to hear you're having a bad time. Take care of yourself! Blackfish was an absolutely heartbreaking movie and it solidified my stance against supporting places where you can swim with captive animals or watch killer whales put on a show.

I have never been to Sea World but I think that film really opened a lot of people's eyes about it. It's nice to see that the trainers genuinely care so much about the orcas, but the orcas should have never been in there in the first place. I lost my shit when the guy broke down talking about capturing the babies 🙁 I'm pretty sure I cannot handle watching The Cove!!

You're the best Agness – I never feel as if I've been busy or accomplished anything but you always remind me! Where in the Philippines are you headed? There is some AMAZING diving there, and it would be a nice warm place to start 🙂

Blackfish tore me up and I so loved Seaworld as a kid because I loved Killer Whales in mega thanks to Free Willy, but now I despise it all. I then watched The Cove afterwards and oh man, a whole other sad story about our beloved dolphins.

Wow, you have been a busy bee this month. You really inspire me to try some diving one day. I might do it when in the Philippines next month, can't wait! Congrats on your Expat Blog Awards for Honduras!! Well done!

Beautiful picture. That is fantastic. I'd like to dive one day, only approved for snorkeling at the moment 🙂

Thanks doll! That was from the leader of a dive group from the states and he had a killer camera set-up.

I'm totally into that gratuitous diving photo. Such a cool angle. Congrats on 17!
