Roatan Roundup: Months 35 + 36 – THREE YEARS!

August 14, 2015 by Rika 16 Comments

Uhhhh…. WHAT? I’ve been on this island full-time for three YEARS? I don’t even know what to say.

One place I haven’t been lately is on this blog. And this is why:

I have (very happily) returned to diving and have been doing nothing but eat, sleep, dive and repeat. It doesn’t leave much time for blogging, or anything else really, but just know that I’m underwater and smiling. And I’ll be back around here soon.

This isn’t much of a traditional roundup, since I have had zero posts to recap. It’s more of a celebratory post. I never thought when I started this blog in early 2012 that I’d be writing my three year anniversary on Roatan from my balcony here after a day of diving. No matter what happens next, this has been a serious achievement for me.

Cheers to three years on this little rock in the Caribbean. Thanks, Roatan, for putting up with me this long. You’re a salty bitch sometimes but I really do love you.

You can always see all my roundup posts by clicking on the ’roundup’ tag below!

Guys, make sure to follow me on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter … there’s lots of extras posted there that don’t make it onto the blog. I also have Google+ if anyone even uses that? And I’m on Bloglovin’, so you can follow me there too! Plus it makes me try to post more than once a month. So there’s that.

OK, I’m kind of obsessed with that wetsuit. Is it a two piece? I have never actually owned my own and am thinking it’s finally an investment worth making…

And I started reading your blog when you first moved to Roatan. Can’t believe that was THREE years ago!

It’s actually just wetsuit pants, and I’m wearing a rash guard on top. I hate full wetsuits 🙁 But this summer has been colder than usual (relatively…ha!) so I broke down and got these pants. They’re Roxy: http://www.surfstitch.com/product/roxy-optic-nature-surf-pant-cabbage and I love them! They’re also really high-viz underwater so it’s easy for me to tell my divers to make sure they stay close enough to see the crazy pants. The only downside is now I know why wetsuits are black – my pants are already growing mold on the blue/yellow parts! The shop I’m working at now has some half black half white suits, and the white parts are all moldy too. It’s on black suits as well, but you can’t see it 😉

(And uhhh yeah… where the hell has THREE YEARS gone!?!?! Thanks for following along chica! xo)

    Congratulations on 3 years!

Do you sometimes take cruise ship passengers on fun dives? Would you?

Thanks Sandra! I don’t often take cruise ship passengers because I tend to choose to work at shops that don’t take cruise ship divers haha. They are often a lot of work, and they usually require their own boat/divemaster because of port call times, delays, etc. that don’t work with the regular boat schedules – and most of the time they aren’t great divers and need a lot of attention, so we tend to try to keep them away from the regular fun diving groups.

That being said, I do offer private divemaster services on a one-off basis, so if you are coming or someone you know, just send me an email and we can coordinate!

I’m very excited to hear that you are back into the water. Your dry period put some temporary doubt into my head on doing my own cubicle throwdown since diving was going to be my primary activity.

It’s always good to have a backup. Diving in almost any area of the world fluctuates with high and low season, and unless you’re financially independent, it’s always a good idea to have something else to do in slow season when there are few or no divers! Also, it’s very easy to hurt your ears or get sinus problems while diving – and these will keep you out of the water for a few weeks – so again, a backup is a good idea 🙂

Congrats on three years, Rika! We just celebrated three years on the road as well… it’s crazy to think we’ve all made it this far and the adventure lives on! Maybe year four will finally be the year we get to dive together???
