Hello from rainy season (FINALLY!) on Roatan. After suffering through September and October like…well… a white girl that gets overheated way too easily living in the Caribbean… we have arrived in rainy season with cooler temperatures (that being around 30C/86F rather than 45C/113F) and loads of rain. I promise not to complain for at least a month into it. That’s pretty good for me, all things considered.
Down to business!
Fifteen long months after leaving the corporate grind in Canada and here I am, still chugging along. I received my Master Scuba Diver Trainer rating from PADI (the next step up from the basic Open Water Scuba Instructor) and the official ‘shop supervisor’ title where I work (although I’ve been doing it without the title for the last 8 months…but everyone knows nothing counts without the title and that stands even on a tropical island) and it’s shaping up to be a really busy holiday season for us so I’m excited for that. Lots of great divers lately which makes a huge difference in my job satisfaction! Grumpy people who hate every dive and shitty divers make for very loooonnnnnnngggggggg days.
In blog news, I have recently changed to a 3rd party commenting system, Disqus, which I hope you guys like better (*cough cough Alex cough*). Unfortunately when importing all the old comments it treated every single one as a ‘guest’ post so the links are lost. I suggest leaving me lots of new comments to make up for it 🙂 You can still comment as a guest using this system – you don’t have to log in to Disqus, Facebook or Twitter to comment unless you want to. Feedback is appreciated… what do you guys think? Do you use Disqus on your blog?
Let’s do the roundup guys – MONTH 15!!
1. Gratuitous diving photo:
‘helping’ my boat captain install a mooring line. mostly just ‘supervising’! (i am running out of photos of myself. need to go for another dive with sarah!) |
2. Posts from the last month:
I’ve tried to be a little more active with blogging lately. I feel like I’m juggling a lot with not a ton of free time, but this space is important to me so I made it more of a priority this month.
- my comedic yet true take on things your dive instructor will never tell you
- a guest post from Mark about the best scuba diving spots around the world
- a big blog overhaul and new design to kick rainy season off with a bang!
- I was excited to announce my writing partnership with ScubaDiveDestinations.com
- had a look at all the creepy-crawlies around my jungle that I live in (caution: don’t click there if photos of spiders, frogs, lizards or snakes scare you!)
- showcased one of my proudest moments as a dive professional – I was interviewed by PADI and had it posted on their blog for all to see!
3. Coolest thing I’ve found on the internet this month:
This one goes out to my boat captain Willy – he’s been singing the hook of this old reggae song for weeks now, and it makes me scream with laughter every time. Maybe don’t play this loud at work or in front of little kids who are apt to repeat it. But seriously, have a good dance party to this badass jam:
RAISE YA HAN AN TELL ME YA PANTY SIZE!! Me no wan, me no wan no big panty gyal! (Island-talk translation: Raise your hand and tell me your panty size. I don’t want any big panty girls.) Hahaha. Classic. He has been singing that every damn day. Last week our divers were Mormons, so that was awesome. They loved it.
So cheers to 15 months – here’s to crazy sunsets on my deck, mixing blue curacao into everything, nightly electricity failure meaning candlelight yoga and hoping for no spiders, wreck dives, finally not being too hot to sleep in and eating way too many fried tortillas after work.

No way!! Haha well enjoy 🙂

Haha I know right, the hook stays in your head forever! I switched to Disqus mostly because of two things: one, readers hate the captcha on the Google one, and two, I like that now people get an email when I reply to them… it seems to facilitate conversations better. With the Google/Blogger one it doesn't tell anyone when someone replies to them and I doubt people spend time going back to check for a reply. So far so good!

Yeah girl! It's been great! And I have NO idea where Willy got it… he's full of interesting things like that 🙂

Where in the world did y'all (I'mma Texan) dig that song from! lol I probably shouldn't have played it so close to going to bed. I'll wake up singing it. 🙂 Month 15 has been a great one. Supervisor, awesome PADI interview, all kinds of good bits and pieces!

haha amazing song and disqus seems to work well so far! What made you switch?
Rika - Cubicle Throwdown says
Thanksss! Yeah I wish there was an actual video to go along with it rather than just that pic, I can only imagine what it would entail haha!
Ashley of Ashley Abroad says
Hahah love that video. And congrats on the PADI interview, that's huge!

Hahaha well thank you for sending love through captcha codes 🙂 And I still got tons of spam even with those. You can thanks Alex (below) for getting on my case to get rid of them!! My old theme didn't support 3rd party commenting systems so I was kinda stuck. Now with the new redesign I'm free to Disqus away to my heart's content!
Colleen Brynn says
Yes, the disqus is a huge improvement. I feel like every time I was typing in those damn codes I was channeling my love for you in order to get through it. Especially when it made me redo it because I couldn't see properly.
Congrats on making it to 15 months girl!
Rika - Cubicle Throwdown says
Hehe glad you like it lady!! Hopefully I get less spam, if not I'll have to look into one of those checkboxes or something. So far so good (other than the importing issue mentioned in the post) and when I emailed their tech support asking for help, I was responded to twice in less than 20 minutes! Amazing support!!

Yeeeheeeee no more captcha! I am one happy camper. Let me know how you like Disqus, I've been debating switching.
