November 5, 2013 by Rika

Does Roatan have spiders, snakes and other creepy crawlies? That's a definite yes, read on to find out more about the jungle creatures that make Roatan home.IF YOU CAN'T HANDLE PHOTOS OF SNAKES OR SPIDERS, PRESS 'BACK' ON YOUR BROWSER NOW!There, you've been warned. And here is a harmless lizard before the scary photos.  As you know, I'm currently housesitting. What I didn't mention is that this house is literally in the Roatan jungle. That's okay with me. But I ...

And Now, Back to Diving.

September 6, 2013 by Rika

So that was an interesting 3.5 weeks I spent in Canada. It was too many days and then not enough, as always. I stuffed my face, I laughed myself silly and I missed Roatan. I came back a few days ago and am slowly getting settled back in to the heat, the bugs, my favorite people, and being underwater.Since I had decided to buy a new camera for my new contract position with a marketing company doing photography for a resort here in Roatan, my old Canon point and shoot looked like a pretty good ...

Lady Luck is a Mermaid.

June 29, 2013 by Rika

I've talked before a few times about how lucky I've been here, and how expat life here is like a roller coaster with some pretty big ups sometimes. Well, lady luck has been visiting me again...and this time underwater! In the past month, several times I was not supposed to have been on certain dives... I pestered my co-worker to switch, or got on a different boat because my student asked to switch, etc. And holy crap, have I ever been rewarded!First... a pod of 30 wild dolphins ...

You live in Honduras and don’t speak Spanish? Que??

June 8, 2013 by Rika

I would say the #2 question* people always ask me when they find out I live in Honduras is: "So you speak Spanish then?"   And then I feel guilty and ashamed for about three seconds, because the answer is "not really".   BUT!   I do live in Honduras.... however, I actually live off the coast of the mainland on an island called Roatan. A quick peruse of Roatan's Wikipedia page lets you know that the local islanders of Roatan are mostly of European and ...

So you want to go diving on Roatan?

May 7, 2013 by Rika

You just bought a plane ticket to Roatan? AWESOME. You want to go diving? SWEET.I'm a dive instructor. I work at a dive shop at a resort. I love diving. I don't love the administrative and logistical headaches that come with people who seem to leave their common sense at home when they come here on a dive holiday. So, just in case they are Googling shit before their trip, may I present to you:THINGS YOU JUST REALLY NEED TO DO IF YOU WANT TO GO DIVING ON ROATAN:(I don't know if ...

Just me and Bobby McGee.

May 1, 2013 by Rika

The time has come....for me to finally get my own place here in West End. I have been living with anywhere from one to six other people since I arrived here last August! My roommates decided to get their own place, and it was high time that I found my own digs as well. I think 28 is too old to still have roommates! I know some people love it and for the most part I've had positive experiences here, but it was just time for my own place and my own space. So it's just me and my dog ...

Life here is like camping 24/7.

April 7, 2013 by Rika

It shouldn't shock me after 8 months of living here, but there are so many things I do here that I would never do back in Canada. When I think about it, it makes me feel like I'm camping. When we go camping in Canada, all bets are off. We eat shitty food, nothing gets cleaned properly, dirty clothes are the norm and we don't shower. And then we go home and never ever do any of those things because they're disgusting.camping during a surf trip to tofino, BC So without ...

Updates in 5 points or less.

March 1, 2013 by Rika

1. Yes, I'm home! Back in West End and so happy to see Roatan again. I managed to get my first rum punch within 15 minutes of arriving. It was really surreal coming back here as I arrived exactly a year after visiting Roatan for the first time. I remembered leaving with my temporary open water diver & advanced open water diver cards, saying goodbye to new friends and telling myself that someday I would end up here and become a dive instructor. And...a year later...I DID ...
